Trends change fast, and it’s not always easy to know how to adapt them for our unique (and beautiful!) body shapes. We believe that fashion is about feeling great in the looks we love and feeling great in who we are. But, you could say that we follow guidelines, not rules. So we created this handy guide to help you learn how to dress your body shape and play up your most favorite features with styles you have (or should have) in your closet.
But first things first, do you know your body shape?
- Apple: This body type is characterized by a larger bust and stomach, with narrower hips and shoulders.
- Pear (Triangle): This body type is characterized by a larger bottom and hips, with a smaller bust and waist.
- Hourglass: This body type is characterized by a defined waist, with curves in both the bust and hips.
- Rectangle (Straight) : This body type is characterized by a straight up-and-down figure, with no real curves.
- Inverted triangle: This body type is characterized by a larger bust and shoulders, with a smaller waist and hips.
Once you know your body type, you can start to dress and style yourself in a way that flatters your figure.
Here are some tips for each body type:
Apple:
- Choose clothes that create the illusion of a smaller waist. This could include empire waist dresses, A-line skirts, or tops with a peplum.
- Avoid clothes that are too tight or too loose around the waist.
- Emphasize your legs by wearing heels or boots with a pointed toe.
- Wear the dress with V or deep V necklines that create the illusion of an elongated torso.
- Accessories like necklaces and earrings.
- Wear printed dresses or patterned jacket and Monochrome looks, dark colors, full or 3/4th sleeve dresses, and flowy tops will help.
Pear:
- Balance your hips by adding volume to your upper body. This could include tops with ruffles, patterns, or bright colors.
- Choose pants or skirts with a high waist to create the illusion of longer legs.
- Skinny jeans with loose tops help create an hourglass illusion. Crop tops, sweetheart, V or deep-V, padded jackets and tops, scoop, or boat necks will balance your bottom.
- Avoid skin-fitting tops, halter necklines, and loose bottoms unless you prefer the look.
Hourglass:
- Show off your curves by wearing fitted clothes that accentuate your waist.
- Choose tops with a V-neck or sweetheart neckline to draw attention to your bust.
- Experiment with different patterns and colors to create a fun and stylish look.
- To flaunt your waistline, go with a belt at your natural waistline or below the belly button. A-line dresses. Body-hugging dresses are your thing.
- Avoid pairing loose tops or bottoms might kill the look.
Rectangle:
- Add curves to your figure by wearing clothes with a bit of a waistline. This could include belts, peplum tops, or wrap dresses.
- Choose clothes that are fitted in the bust and hips, but not too tight.
- Avoid clothes that are too loose or too baggy.
- Sleeveless, strapless, and sweetheart lines are your thing. Blazers, long jackets, and capes .A-line skirts, ruffled and layered tops.
Inverted triangle:
- Balance your shoulders by adding volume to your hips and legs. This could include skirts with a full or A-line skirt, or pants with a bootcut or flare.
- Choose tops with a scoop or boat neckline to draw attention to your face.
- Avoid clothes that are too tight around the shoulders or chest.
- Pencil-cut skirts, skinny jeans, etc., with any tops, will look great. V-neck lines work well and create an illusion of narrow shoulders
- Padded jackets, horizontal stripes, and light colors on the upper part of the body, if you love wide shoulders.
- Let all the patterns, ruffles, layers, etc., be part of the bottom part of your body, and the upper body be minimalistic
One Last Thought On Body Shapes
Everybody and every body is different. If you’re not one of these shapes—that’s ok! These dressing guidelines are best used as a starting point to understand the basics. And, let’s be honest—most women are a combination of several! It’s all about mixing & matching until you find what’s best for you. It's important to remember that these are just general tips, and there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to dressing for your body type. The most important thing is to find clothes that make you feel confident and comfortable.
