The Indian Postal Service is one of the Group ‘A’ Civil Services of India. They are responsible for running ‘India Post’, the largest postal network in the world which provides services ranging from traditional postal services to banking and e-commerce services. 


Indian Post Office Recruitment Eligibility Criteria 2023

Candidates are required to have complete knowledge of the local language of the respective States or Union Territory. They should be able to not only communicate but also read and write in that language. Knowledge of cycling is also one of the important prerequisites.


Aspirants who want to pursue jobs in the Indian postal service (IPos) must appear for the Civil Services examination. After clearing UPSC and being selected for IPoS, candidates can start their career as Senior Superintendents of Railway Mail Services (SSRM) or Senior Superintendents of Post Office (SSPO). The officers for the IPoS posts are also selected after being promoted from the ‘Group B’ officer’s post.

  1. Monitoring and management of divisional postal services
  2. Overall administration of Mail and Post offices in a division
  3. Optimization and expansion planning of the postal network inside a division
  4. Management of technology, finances and materials.
  5. Marketing of India Post services and products such as Banking and Insurance
  6. Handling Public Grievance Redressal System and customer relations
  7. Coordinating with other government agencies such as Police, District Administration etc.
  8. Management of personnel in the division.

IPoS officers enjoy the same perks and facilities as other officers from ‘Group A’ Services of the Indian Government; such as government accommodation, concessional medical facilities etc. They are also eligible for deputation to other services and can proceed on study leaves funded by the government.


Training Period in Indian Postal Service

Training of Probationers in the Indian Postal Service is conducted in two stages:


Stage 1: Foundation course at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy(SVPNA), Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration(LBSNAA), and National Academy of Direct Taxes. All these trainings are based on the orders of the Department of Personnel and Training.


Stage 2: Training for professionals in administration and management of postal services RAKNPA (Rafi Ahmed Kidwai National Postal Academy).
